A Table with a View: Dining Behind the Dunes

A seaside restaurant in East Sussex can mean many things. Some are terraces built around chips and a pint. Camber Sands offers something different. The dunes do most of the scenery work here and the dining room only has to stay out of their way.

Harry's is a French bistro opposite the beach car park as you come into Camber. Sit down and the view makes the introductions.

What you notice first

Most guests notice the windows first. They are large and they face toward the dunes so the landscape arrives before the menu does. Inside there are wicker chairs and warm lighting and plenty of greenery against the glass.

Guests often tell us the room feels like a friendly house near the sea. We take that as high praise. The design aims for "a sense of seaside escapism" and it gets there quickly.

The light through the windows

Daylight is the best decoration in the room. It comes off the dunes and settles on the white tablecloths and the wicker. Lunch feels bright and easy. As the afternoon turns toward evening the light warms and the lamps take over.

Every guest at weekend lunch is asked to order a main course. Our tiered seafood platter of crab and oysters and lemon looks very good in this light. Our post on the seafood platter tells you more about it.

The dunes just beyond

The dunes are the reason to sit by the glass. Grass moves along the ridge and the beach sits just beyond. Anyone looking for a restaurant with a sea view in Sussex gets a layered one here. The dunes come first. The beach and the water follow.

That closeness shapes the day. In our experience many guests walk the sand before lunch and arrive hungry. Others come in after a day on the beach for dinner.

Dogs are welcome in the Sitting Room and the Bar at lunch only. The main dining room and evening service stay dog-free.

A room design

Nothing here is rushed. The bar has a wooden counter and green stools and it suits a proper drink before dinner or instead of it. The Sitting Room next door works for a slower start or a lighter bite.

The kitchen follows the same unhurried mood. Head chef is especially keen on dishes for two or more that show off one ingredient at its peak. You can read how it all came together on our About Us page.

Best tables for a view

Tables by the windows give the clearest look at the dunes. Ask the team about them when you book. Lunch gives the most daylight and evening gives the warmest glow. A seat at the bar shows you the room itself with its green stools and warm lighting.

The Terrace is reserved for diners on the day. It cannot be booked in advance.

Children aged 6 and over are welcome at lunch and aged 12 and over in the evening. There is no children's menu. Lunch is the easiest time for families who want the view in full daylight.

Book your table

Reserve through our Book a Table page and choose lunch for daylight or dinner for lamplight. Walk the dunes first if time allows. Harry's sits opposite the beach car park as you come into Camber.
