A Day Trip to Rye and Camber Sands: Where to Have Dinner

A good day out on this stretch of the East Sussex coast ends with a proper table. Rye fills the morning and the dunes fill the afternoon. That leaves the evening free for dinner near Camber Sands and a little planning turns it from a rushed stop into the best part of the trip.

A day exploring Rye and the coast

Rye is best on foot. The old town is small enough to cover in a morning and the cobbled lanes reward a slow pace. Start early while the streets are quiet. Mermaid Street makes the classic photograph and the independent shops and tearooms around it can easily take up an hour or two.

Camber Sands is a short drive from Rye. Its wide beach and big dunes feel very different from the shingle along much of this coast.

Save the dunes for the afternoon. The light softens later in the day and the crowds thin out.

Leave the beach around ninety minutes before your table. That gives you time to shake out the sand and change into something dry.

Dinner near Camber Sands

Evening dining in Camber Sands is relaxed and a few practical points help. Children aged twelve and over are welcome in the evening and there is no children's menu. Families with younger children can join us at lunch instead when the age is six and over. Dogs are welcome in the Sitting Room and the Bar at lunch only so evening visits are best planned without them.

Arriving at Harry's

You'll find us opposite the beach car park as you come into Camber. Inside there are wicker chairs and warm lighting with big windows that face the dunes. Harry Cragoe built the room around memories of time in California with his wife Sigrid. He wanted a sense of seaside escapism and that vintage coastal mood is still the point.

Start at the bar. The wooden counter and green stools suit a drink before dinner and the Sitting Room next door is good for a slower start.

What to order after a long day

The seafood platter of crab and oysters with lemon works well for two or four. Our seafood platter guide explains what comes on it. Steak frites is the answer when you want something simpler. Finish with a classic French pudding built around seasonal fruit or ice cream.

The à la carte changes regularly and the daily specials follow whatever Matthew can source at its best. The menus page shows the current choice.
